The Assistant Editorial Manager is responsible for managing the core, editorial component of the Creative Services department (proofing/QC). This includes management of proofing/QC employees’ work schedules, workload, training, growth and development and workflow operations. Also, oversee and handle all personnel issues related to proofing/QC and ensure compliance with company policies. The Assistant Editorial Manager is accountable for quality standards, production goals, and client/publisher deadlines handed down by the Production Manager.
The Assistant Editorial Manager will also be responsible for proofreading the magazines for the final time before they are sent to publishers for review. For this, you must be detail oriented, possess strong grammatical skills, worked with proofreader marks and be familiar with AP Style. Must be able to concentrate and do great work despite the bustle of activity around you. A degree in English, journalism or communications and knowledge of Word and InDesign are a definite plus.
Essential Job Duties
- Oversee work produced by proofreaders and QC staff.
- Perform quality control checks/reporting to ensure quality and timeliness of jobs.
- Develop ideas, procedures and protocols to enhance the workflow, timeliness and accuracy of work produced by your team.
- Hold regular meetings with staff to discuss modifications to production workflow, policy changes, performance issues, etc.
- Perform training for new or transferring employees, on job requirements, quality procedures and workflow.
- Work with publishers to resolve editorial-related concerns or problems.
- Share in the occasional weekend supervisory responsibility.
- Manage proofing/QC personnel including, attendance, and scheduling, reporting all personnel issues in writing to the Production Manager.
- Assist in the personnel hiring and appraisal processes for your team
- Assist in the development of new scheduling strategies
- Create time for team members to work on previously established objectives including the development of "Best of" writers lists, generic industry "call out" research, local website proofing support, etc.
Minimum Requirements
- Fully understands job flow and the impacts of events, procedures, policies and how they affect production.
- Must be resourceful and have the ability to develop alternate methods to produce the necessary output when needed.
- Good personnel management skills including the ability to motivate, coach and positively direct employees.
- Must have strong communication and organization skills.
- Must set good example for employees for work ethic, level of customer service when working with publishers and/or their clients, and excellent inter office communications.
- At least three years of experience in a publishing or production environment where duties included managing members of a proofing/QC team.
